Hours: Full-time, must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends including Sunday.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: As part of a public service department at Central Library, the Youth Services Assistant provides reference services, advisory services, programming, and materials management by performing the duties listed below and related activities as needed with the goal of providing excellence in customer service consistent with the policies and mission of the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library.
- Prepares for and facilitates internal and external programs related to youth aged children.
- Works the reference desk, taking and responding to customer inquiries.
- Orders, picks up, inventories and prepares materials to be shelved; weeds and withdraws materials.
- Attends various meetings as a member of the department.
- Coordinates and produces bulletin boards and publicity related to programs.
- May drive the bookmobile.
- May schedule and coordinate school tour visits.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of available library materials, technology and services; thorough knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, practices and manuals available to assist in customer service; general knowledge of the procedures, practices and equipment in a public library; some knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; general skill using standard office equipment and related hardware and software; general skill using standard library technology and software; general skill learning specialized software related to performing essential functions; general skill providing excellent internal and external customer service; ability to take oral and written direction; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to effectively recommend library materials and services to meet customer needs; ability to complete database searches effectively; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, program facilitators and the general public.
Physical Requirements: This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking, sitting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Requires: Bachelor's degree and experience working in direct customer service with a library or other highly diverse customer base. Must have great customer service skills, excellent communication skills, be self motivated, must be able to work a flexible schedule including daytime, evening, Saturday and Sunday hours, and be dependable and responsible. Applicants must adhere to Library’s Dress Guidelines (“Business Casual”) and dress suitable for the task at hand, and must maintain good personal hygiene in compliance with Library Code of Conduct.
Special Requirements: Applicants must hold an Indiana State Library LC5 certification or be willing to achieve certification within 3 years of hire date. This certification requires a minimum of 9 semester hours of specific library science courses; courses may be taken on-line through currently offered associate, bachelor or master's degree program.
