Exhibit Info

Built to a scale of two inches to the foot, these pieces of furniture were produced in exact detail and construction to their originals. Extensive research was conducted in an effort to match the wood, color, fabric, and design of each piece so that no differences could be discerned (except in size). All drawers were removable, cabinet doors had locking latches, beds often had mattresses with linen, and some chairs even had hand woven cane-bottom seats. The construction of these unique items was so intricate that even at the height of demand production numbers rarely exceeded 100 pieces per year.

Artist Bio

Works Progress Administration Miniature Furniture During the mid 1930s and early 1940s a unique work relief program was initiated by the W.P.A. Indiana State Museum Project. Centered in the southern Indiana town of Evansville, six individuals, led by a man named Rheinhard Schmitt, began manufacturing authentic miniature furniture for display in museums, libraries and schools throughout the Hoosier state. The purpose of this endeavor was to preserve in miniature form the period furnishings of American homes during the Depression era.
