"Pride and Prejudice" the movie

I know, I know, this is supposed to be a book blog.  However, since P&P is based upon one of the most beloved novels of all time, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, I could not resist noting the differences between the 2001 BBC, A&E version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle and the the 2006 version with Kiera Knightly.

I have just rewatched both of these and wondered how I could have ever thought the latter was anywhere near as good as the 2001 production.  The first is longer, two discs instead of one, and therefore much more in keeping with the novel.  And of course Colin Firth as Darcy...can there ever be another Darcy such as this?  I think not.  Janeites across the country have long held him up as perfection.

At any rate, see what you think and let me know.  And By the By Actor's Theater in Louisville is mounting a production of P&P from late September until November 8.  The Jane Austen Society members will be there in droves.

I have watched the BBC version at least 3 times -- maybe 4.  I even talked my husband into watching it once.  It is one of the most romantic flicks of all time (and of course is much truer to the novel)!  I agree that the 2006 version pales in comparison.  In fact, at the risk of being blasphemous, I think that the novel pales in comparison!  This is one case where (here I go again) the movie is better than the book!!!

Colin Firth is Mr. Darcy--- be still my heart!!!  I've seen it twice and just knowing it's out there for a future viewing makes me feel good.  I always recommend this version to my patrons and those who have already seen it get that swooning expression that makes you go  "oh yeah!!!!" when I say Pride & Prejudice BBC, A&E.

It really made Bridget Jones Diary worth watching to have Colin Firth in it.

I love the BBC adaptation, but I also really enjoyed the Kiera Knightley/Matthew McFayden version.  Colin Firth (much to his chagrin, I might add) IS the quintessential Darcy...there's no getting around that.  But both versions have their strong points, I think.
