Studs Terkel dies, age 96

Terkel book coverAuthor, radio host, actor, activist, and Chicago symbol Louis "Studs" Terkel died today at his Chicago home at age 96. At his bedside was a copy of his latest book, P.S. Further Thoughts From a Lifetime of Listening, scheduled for a November release.

I read "Working" and thought - still think - it's a work of utter genius.  Terkel was a true working-class hero, a lifelong friend of fellow Chicagoan Mike Royko, and a partial inspiration for Royko's fictional foil "Slats Grobnik."

The two of them really defined, for me anyway, the "Chicago style" of journalism.
