When Will There Be Good News (2008) is the third book by Kate Atkinson that includes Jackson Brody. I have not read the other two books, but I will go back and read them now. I don't think there will be any problem reading them out of sequence. I wouldn't say that the Brody character is a featured character, the characters of Reggie Chase, the mother's helper, and Louise Monroe. the police detective, are much more prominent in this book.
The book starts with a a meaningless act of violence that leave a mother and her small children all dead, save six-year-old Joanna, Joanna's story is intrigue to the tying all the many plot lines together and Reggie is the string that does the pulling.
This is a well written suspense novel with all the necessary components to keep you glued to the page, even though there are lots of seemingly hard to believe coincidences and of course the age-old mistaken identity plot - it pulls together in a way that is not easy to guess. Atkinson leaves you with enough of a cliff hanger to want to read the next installment, but not too big of a cliff hanger to leave you frustrated.
