Calla Lily Ponder is the youngest child and only daughter of Lenora (M'Dear) and Will (Papa) Ponder, proprietors of the Swing N'Sway dance studio and the Crowning Glory hair salon in La Luna, Louisiana. Here, Calla Lily enjoys an idyllic childhood spent with her friends, Renee, Sukey, & Tuck, swimming in the La Luna river, roller skating and hanging out at Nelle's Shop N'Skate, and riding horses. All the while she is under the ever present and watchful eye of the Moon Lady whom M'Dear has taught her to turn to and to use as her guide, in both times of joy and of pain, throughout her life.

And that is exactly what she does. When her world is turned upside down in her late teens, Calla Lily finds strength and solace in the Moon Lady. She allows the soothing water of La Luna to guide her to beauty school in New Orleans to fulfill her dream of learning to heal others through the art of fixing their hair. Calla Lily hones her craft and finds that healing touch that she so admired in her mother's hands, yet she is nearly torn apart by the twists and turns and heartbreaks of her own life's journey. Though Calla Lily can't help but persevere. With the help of the Moon Lady and the memory of M'Dear's words of wisdom, Calla Lily's journey comes full circle... back to La Luna and her own Crowning Glory.
