Last Chance Harvey (2008) starts out kind of sad and depressing. I also thought, well, just another "chick flick." I stuck it out for Emma Thompson, and I guess because of Dustin Hoffman, but mostly for Emma Thompson. After 15 minutes or so I was happy that I did because it was touching, funny, and in an a way uplifting.
Harvey (Hoffman) is an irritating guy who writes commercial jingles. He is in trouble professionally because he is getting dated. He has had his priorities mixed up for years and has a poor relationship with his ex-wife and daughter. He goes to London for his daughter's wedding and basically is treated poorly by the family and ignored. He meets Kate (Thompson) who has problems of her own - deadend job, dependent mother, lonely, etc. The film goes from there...
Dame Eileen Atkins plays Kate's mother and is her usual exceptional self. Her ongoing side storyline watching her new neighbor is hilarious - he keeps carrying things into his BBQ (smoker) and she is convincing herself they are bodies!
If you like lighter movies with great actors - take time out for this one.
