The Ting Tings have captivated my airplay time this passed week. A two-person punk/alt rock band with an
upbeat sound and relentlessly danceable songs, the Ting Tings have what it
takes to get people off their duffs and tapping their feet.
Katie White (vocals, guitar, and bass drum) and Jules De
Martino (vocals, drums, and electronics) make up the Ting Tings – named because
of a woman Katie worked with by that name at a NY boutique. The CD is titled We Started Nothing, and includes ten tracks. The recording starts with a bang –
Great DJ – and provides a taste of things to come.
Yes, there are some things I don’t care for, like the
over-reliance on talking through vocals when one has a perfectly good (lovely
actually) singing voice, or the necessary inclusion of dissonance in almost
every song. But these are
complaints I have generally with punk, and are certainly not specific to the
Ting Tings.
