With the record-breaking temps we've had this summer, many are looking for ways to reduce their utility bills.

Energizing Indiana offers free home energy assessments to those who apply. An Energy Advisor will visit your home to perform the assessment. You'll receive step-by-step guidance; energy saving products, such as CFL bulbs, low-flow faucet aerators & shower heads, and insulation for your water heater; and a comprehensive report detailing additional ways to make your home more energy efficient.

This service is free, and the library Foundation will receive $25 for every energy assessment conducted through EVPL. Reduce your energy costs while helping our library Foundation!

Indiana Economic Stimulus Info

A new website was launched today for those who would like information about the Economic Stimulus Package and the use of funds in the state of Indiana. The address for the website is INvest.in.gov. It will be maintained to keep Hoosiers informed about how our state's stimulus money is being used. There is a Frequently Asked Questions tab which is gives a preliminary list of how the funds are to be allocated, and answers some basic questions. Other tabs include Clean Water Programs, Highways, Bridges and Transit information, Newsroom, and Useful Links. The Formulaic Funding tab is still under construction. According to Gov. Mitch Daniels, the website will be updated often to keep us infomed of current events related to the stimulus.

Help protect your credit with a security freeze

Hoosiers can help protect their credit with one of the strongest security freeze laws in the nation.

Consumers can freeze access to their credit reports. When the consumer wishes to release their credit report, they use their personal identification number to temporarily allow access to the report.

Security freezes work because they prevent criminals from falsely obtaining credit through someone else's name.

When you are shopping for credit, you can 'thaw' the freeze by making a simple phone call or sending an e-mail and then re-freeze the credit when you want. Freeze and thaw requests are honored within 15 minutes of their receipt.

Placing a security freeze does not hurt a consumer's credit rating and the service is free to everyone in Indiana.

Criminals will go to great lengths to steal a consumer's credit because obtaining good credit is highly difficult. People are struggling as it is and the last thing a consumer needs to deal with is having their credit stolen. By following a few simple steps, Hoosiers can help protect the credit they've established.

Free Security Freeze Kits can be obtained by calling AARP Indiana toll free at 866-448-3618 or by sending an electronic mail message to inaarp@aarp.org .

Beginning January 1, 2009, consumer reporting agencies made electronic security freeze requests available online. More information can be found at www.indianaconsumer.com .

Indiana lawmakers overwhelmingly passed the security freeze law in 2007.

Indiana Veterans of World War I

Do you have a family member who served during World War I, the "war to end all wars""? The original federal military records were lost in a fire in St Louis, so a 5-year project is researching the Indiana Veterans of World War I. Among other resources used, Service Records of Vanderburgh County by Ethel F. McCoullough and C.F. Hammerstein covers 4,537 local veterans, so we are well represented. The site also includes information from interviews from returning veterans: home front stories, camp life, hospital experiences, women in service, P.O.W. memories and explanations of the various brances of service.

Check out the names of veterans you've heard of and see how well they're represented. If you are aware of a veteran who is not listed or have additional information, you can contribute anything you know about him or her by emailing Jan Mattingly at WWVets@Gmail.com.

Find out if you are registered to vote -- as well as your polling place

If you're not sure that you're registered to vote, or you want to double check the location of your Election Day polling place, go to the Indiana Statewide Voter Registration System. Click on "Voter Registration" and you will be asked to fill in these fields:

county
last name
first name
birth date

Hit FIND and you will see your registration status as well as your township and precinct. You can also see this other valuable information:

POLLING PLACE: Click on the PLUS sign in front of "Polling Place" and the location, address, and even driving directions pop up. You can also see if the polling place is ADA compliant.
DISTRICTS: Click on the PLUS sign in front of "Districts" and you will see your districts for U. S. Congress, State Senate, State House, County Commission, County Council, City Council and School system.

Indiana Memory

Many books, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, and maps have and are being digitized to make them viewable online on the relatively new website, Indiana Memory, http://www.in.gov/memories. You can search by broad topic or by keyword. The Indiana State Library coordinates this project, but the items are from library collections all over the state. This is Indiana's version of the on-going project of the Library of Congress, American Memory, http://memory.loc.gov.
