There be dragons at the library!

That would be Temeraire specifically, and he is a very special dragon indeed. He is the wonderful centerpiece of Naomi Novik's sci-fi/alternative history series. It is set in England during the Napoleonic Wars. In the series, Novik introduces you to what might have been if dragons had been a fact of life instead of a fascinating myth. The books reminds me of Anne McCaffrey's Pern series, with the added bonus of a strong grounding in actual history. I know, 'how can it be actual history if dragons are involved'? True, but I think Novik does an excellent job of postulating how the existence and use of dragons would have changed historical events. If that sounds dry and boring to you, don't believe it. I became highly invested in Temeraire's heartwarming character and his relationship with his rider, Captain William Lawrence. That relationship, along with the addition of multiple other riders and dragons, keeps the stories riveting. Astronomy Week

I learned something new today. There are two Astronomy Days a year. One in the spring and one in the fall. This fall the day is October 1st, and the week Astronomy Day falls in is designated Astronomy Week. So September 26th to October 2nd this year is Astronomy week. I thought this rather serendipitous what with the NASA satellite due to fall from the sky today.

The Astronomical League has a good website for those who want to learn more about astronomy. They also have information on Astronomy Day celebrations around the country as well as helpful information for those who would like to host an Astronomy Day celebration.

For information on stargazing closer to home, The Evansville Astronomical Society's website offers useful stargazing links, a nice calendar of local events, and interesting information on the society's history.

If you'd like to learn a little more about astronomy before you consider contacting your local society, the library has plenty of books on astronomy, the stars and planets, and how to be an amateur astronomer. If you visit Central Library this week, stop by the second floor and check-out our book display by the stairs. To celebrate the week, we have some of our astronomy books on display there for easy access.

Constitution Day -- September 17th

September 17th is the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. It's a great day to spend some time learning about this important document that affects all of us who live in the United States of America. The Open Book Alliance, an Alternative to the Google Library Book Project.

You've probably heard of the Google Library Books Project, a massive project wherein search giant Google teamed up with a number of large research libraries worldwide to scan their holdings in order to make digitized copies of those books available worldwide. Cooperating libraries included Oxford's Bodleian library - the oldest public library in the world - Harvard University Libraries, and the University of Michigan Libraries, giving Google a database which now numbers over 10 million books, many of which are not in the public domain, but still fall under copyright protection. As a result, it wasn't long before a lawsuit was brought against Google by the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers, concerned that people would access their books via Google without paying the authors or publishers of protected works the royalties they would normally be due.

The result of this lawsuit was a settlement that has become known as the Google Book Settlement, a settlement that many authors, agents, libraries, and lawyers claim gives Google a tremendously unfair advantage over any other digitizing enterprise, gives Google perpetual and exclusive rights to "orphaned works" - books that are still under copyright protection, but for which a copyright claimant has not come forward or been found - if no claim has been filed for them by June 5, 2010. Google maintains that these concerns are overblown. Co-founder Sergey Brin wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times recently essentially calling the Google Books Project the digital equivalent of the Great Library of Alexandria, but UC Berkley law professor Pamela Samuelson responded with a rebuttal, pointing out that:

Unlike any library, Google is a profit-motivated company, out to sell you a product
Libraries and library associations are lining up in opposition to the proposed settlement, something they wouldn't do if Google Books operated like a library
The settlement would put the fair use of copyright materials in jeopardy, and libraries are great believers in fair use
Rights to reader privacy are also at risk (would you like some Adsense advertisements with your book search?)

Enter the Open Book Alliance (OBA), an organization whose mission recognizes that "the mass digitization of books promises to bring tremendous value to consumers, libraries, scholars, and students. The Open Book Alliance will work to advance and protect this promise. And, by protecting it, ... will assert that any mass book digitization and publishing effort be open and competitive." The OBA was co-founded by Peter Brantley, Director of the Bookserver Project at the Internet Archive and previously Director of the Digital Library Federation, and Gary Reback, an intellectual property and trade regulation lawyer generally credited with spearheading the efforts leading to the U.S. Government’s prosecution of Microsoft.

The last sentence of OBA's Mission Statement makes it very clear: "The Open Book Alliance will counter Google, the Association of American Publishers and the Authors’ Guild’s scheme to monopolize the access, distribution and pricing of the largest digital database of books in the world. To this end, we will promote fair and flexible solutions aimed at achieving a more robust and open system."

One of the ways that OBA is striving to "oppose" the Google Book Settlement is through recruiting organizational members to give weight to their mission. Current members include Microsoft and Amazon.com, groups of authors such as the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the Sceince Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, groups of publishers like the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses, and Small Press Distribution, library associations like the New York Library Association and the Special Libraries Association, and many others.

Another way OBA hopes to secure opposition to the Google Book Settlement is to educate the public about its dangers. They have published a quick guide to the proposed book settlement, "Fact vs. Fiction" in pdf format. Their web site features a news center with links to all their press releases and any stories from the mainstream media regarding the proposed settlement. And they have a resources page featuring links to video and transcripts of congressional testimony about the settlement.

World Vegetarian Day & Vegetarian Awareness Month

A friend just let me know that TODAY is World Vegetarian Day! It turns out the whole month of October is Vegetarian Awareness Month! Have you ever considered going vegetarian or vegan? Maybe you could try it out this month. Why not try something new? Look for vegetarian options at the Fall Festival next week, for example. Yes, there really are vegetarian options at the Fall Festival! EVPL has lots of books on making the change to vegetarianism and many, many vegetarian cookbooks. There is a whole world of meat-free options out there; it's not all tofu! Then again, don't be scared of tofu. Remember, you have to try it to know you don't like it.

Ready, set, GO VEGETARIAN!

Happy Banned Books Week!

Banned Books Week takes place this year from September 26 - October 3, and is not a celebration of banning books, but rather a celebration of the freedom to read, and the importance of the First Amendment.

The books featured during Banned Books Week have been the subject of attempted bannings, and illustrate the fact that many people attempt to ban books from a desire to protect everyone else from ideas or images which they find personally distasteful. This is in keeping with Laurence Peters's quote that a censor is "someone who knows more than he thinks you should," and underscores the position of the ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom (OIF) that "materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation," and likewise "should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval."

The OIF releases annual lists of the most frequently challenged books, and it's always interesting reading.

Google Book Settlement May Transform Google Book Search Into Google Bookstore

The November 3, 2008 Library Hotline has a lead article on a landmark settlement between Google and the Authors Guild (AG) and the Association of American Publishers (AAP), two organizations that had filed suit against it over the Google Book Search Project. The details are very sketchy, but "Google has announced that the parties have agreed to expand Google Book Search into what will be the web's largest online commercial book venture. Hotline says "the deal could mean significantly increased access to book content online," but not everyone is happy. Harvard University, for example, has noted that it will not participate with Google in the scanning of in-copyright works, and will continue with its policy of only allowing Google to scan books whose copyright has expired.

On it's web site, Google explains the settlement in terms of what will change and what won't. Access to books that are out of copyright won't change much at all. Access to books that are in copyright but out-of-print, or in copyright and in print, will change from the current "snippet" view to more of what is currently the preview view , where you're allowed to view up to 20 full pages of text, then decide whether you'd like to purchase "full online access" to millions of books. Publishers and authors will have their royalties managed through the creation of a "Book Rights Registry."

You can't, apparently, actually download the titles you purchase - at least not yet - but simply keep then on your "electronic bookshelf" within your Book Search account.

Libraries will be able to "purchase institutional subscriptions" allowing their customers access to the full text of the books on the library's "electronic bookshelf," but there's no information about being able to download or "check out" these ebooks. Public and academic libraries will also be able to offer terminals where users can access the out-of-print books for free. However, an article at Xconomy.com makes the point that, while libraries are supposed to be offered a free, view-only license to Google's digital collections, that the agreement actually "restricts each public library to exactly one Google terminal."

Time will tell whether the proposed model will generate enough money for authors & publishers, or enough interest from the reading & book-buying public. I'm not hopeful, because while I enjoy downloading ebooks to read, maintaining an "electronic bookshelf" on Google's servers as a virtual adjunct to my own print library isn't attractive to me at all.

Catalog Your Personal Book Collection Online

If many of you out there are like me, you have hundreds of books sitting on your bookshelf at home in a certain order that only you can keep organized (to a point). Personally, I shelf mine chronologically by author according to genre, but I am very OCD like that. No matter what kind of order you may keep them in, it's still hard to keep track of them all. Also, in case something devastating would happen wouldn't it be best to have a cataloging system listing all the titles you own?

Now you can at Library Thing, an online cataloging site that allows you to enter your collection in a library-type catalog format. Library Thing allows you to catalog up to 200 titles for free, or as many as you like for $10 a year or $25 for life. Library Thing also allows you to catalog with Amazon, the Library of Congress or 690 other world libraries.
