Learn to Speak German!

Join instructor Hollan Staker in this dynamic German course! This class will cover pronunciation, basic vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and cultural points. The ample activities and exercises and use of multimedia supplements will provide participants with a solid foundation to communicate in German!

The beat of Boom Squad, Inc. will be the start of an amazing finale to the 2009 Teen Summer Reading Program. Join us for a free concert in the park at West Branch Library. Rain or shine, the show will go on. We have a great musical line up you don't want to miss. Record an audio book for LibriVox

June is National Audiobook Month and teens at Central Library Teen Zone celebrated by learning how to read and record audiobooks for LibriVox.

The program opened with the sound of an accordion and the voice of Death, the narrator of Markus Zusak's The Book Thief. A fine introduction and an example of a well read, expertly produced audiobook.

"Does this worry you?

I urge you -- don't be afraid. I'm nothing if not fair.

-- Of course an introduction. A beginning. Where are my manners?"

The sound fades and I bound onto the scene.

"You just heard a portion of the The Book Thief by Markus Zusak read by Allan Cordune, I say."

In The Book Thief, Liesel steals her first book, The Gravedigger's Handbook, which her foster father uses to lull her to sleep and teach her how to read. When Liesel learns how to read she steals books for fun. Liesel is a book thief. She liberates books from Nazi book burnings and shares them with others enthralling even a Nazi woman with her captivating reading.

We didn't learn how to steal books, but liberate and record books in the public domain. We learned how to read, record, and share our voices with others. It's all very easy, sometimes challenging, but rewarding and fun. You too can volunteer. It's not too late. The volunteers over at the LibriVox forum are anxiously waiting to see what the first book "Evansvillains " (particularly teens) will liberate from the public domain.

The program was eye opening. Teens had an opportunity to practice reading and recording their voice, experiencing the thrill, frustration, and fun. John Martin of the Courier & Press wrote an excellent article - Library session gives teens lessons in creating audiobooks for web.

LibriVox is looking for volunteers to record chapters of books in the public domain and release those audio files back onto the net making them available for free. Yes, free audiobooks. Also, check out YALSA's (Young Adult Library Services Association) Amazing Audiobooks for Young Adults for some good books to listen too while travelling, lounging, or simply making moves this summer.

The Book Thief surely won't disappoint. I've also enjoyed on Playaway, Paper Towns by John Green read by Dan John Miller and The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin Narrated by Jesse L. Martin. On CD Hero-Type by Barry Lyga read by Jonathan Todd Ross. What's in your CD player or blaring through your earbuds?

Finding Your First Job or Your Next Job

Finding your first job or your next job this summer may be a challenge, especially in this economy. To be successful, you must skillfully represent yourself.

On Tuesday, April 14 at 6:00pm, Central Library Browning Events Room there will be a program called Finding Your First Job. Two human resources professionals - Michelle Land Harris and Gene Wisheit will share over 40 years of combined knowledge about finding, getting, and being successful on the job. They will also share some good information about applications, resumes, interviews, how to dress. Want to learn and polish those soft or transferable skills needed to be successful in life? Don't miss this program.

Saturday, November 15 was the first annual National Gaming Day @ your Library. Thanks to all who celebrated with us.

Give it up to for EVPL for being crowned the National Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament Champions in a 32-library contest. After a long day of battling riddled with communication and connection problems, EVPL emerged victorious. I want to thank all of you who competed in the preliminary Brawl tournament and to those who went on to represent EVPL in the national event. A special thanks goes out to Shonic and Brett for their endurance and competitive play. Ann Arbor District Library organized and managed the tournament. "THUS, the stage was set for the first-ever (albeit compromised) gtsystem National Brawl Championship Match, featuring the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library of Indiana, the Ann Arbor District Library of Michigan, Jerome Public Library of Idaho, and the East Flagstaff Community Library of Arizona. It was an intense set of matches, but when the dust cleared, the combined skill of the EVPL crew had emerged victorious, defeating AADL and becoming the first-ever gtsystem Brawl Champion, while FPL finished third, and JPL took fourth." - The Saga of the First Annual National Gaming Day.

Overall, we had a good time. We saw many new faces and played several games (even Uno). See you Saturday for another guest Otaku Council member presentation and more gaming.

Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture will be cancelled due to Meet Your Legislators program.

Art 4 art's sake presents - Drawing with Billy Hedel

Local artist Billy Hedel will present a drawing workshop for teens (ages 12-18) at Central Library in the Browning Events Room. Create a work of art and pick up a few drawing techniques.

If you missed Origami with Sean Davis, you missed taking home your very own paper crane. Seriously, Sean did his thing! He demonstrated two basic folds (squash fold and bi-section), sprinkled us with a brief history of the development and spread of origami and no one "killed any cat's". Don't ask. You had to be there! Let me just say everyone was successful and left with some pretty impressive origami.

Billy is sure to be just as successful and you are too. Don't miss Drawing with Billy Hedel.

A Blast from the Past

The Retro Gaming event on Friday, September 12 was a blast! Arcade and console games from Atari, Namco, Capcom, and others were on hand. We played Asteroids, Pong, 1942, Sonic, Galaxian, Galaga, Pacman, and more. It was an informative and fun experience. With the lights dim and the sounds emanating from the consoles, it was reminiscent of an arcade. The only things missing were joystick controllers and feeding quarters.

One teen said, "I only know Pacman and Sonic." It would be interesting to know how the classic games he played rates with his current game play.

The teens showed and appreciation for nostalgia, but I think the program could easily work for adults. What are your vintage video game favorites?

Xbox 360 or PS3?

The library Teen Zone needs your help. It has been suggested by many our teens who frequent Gaming Power Hour (x2) that we purchase a new console. Xbox 360 was suggested for its price and available games i.e. more T-rated games.

While speaking with one of Mr. Hendrix's freshman classes at Harrison High, I got a different opinion. An overwhelming majority suggested we purchase a PS3. The Xbox 360 supporters were outnumbered almost 3:1, but they persevered under the assault of accusations of poor quality and inferior graphics. "You're wasting the library's money if you buy a 360," one student shouted, "It's going to break and be unavailable most of the time." And, this comment almost ended the argument. We settled everyone down and a student eloquently started, "The best game system for the library is the PS3 because it has better quality and can stand up to the rigorous play of teens. The PS3 also has better games." The room exploded!

I realized I wasn't going to solve the console war there, so I told them let's settle it here on our new blog page. They asked one final question, "What console was I going to get?" I told them, I came into the class (not expecting this at all) pretty much sold on getting the Xbox 360, but their arguments persuaded me to consider the PS3.

Despite the suggestive image of the PS3 hovering over the 360 almost victorious, my position is neutral. So, what console do you think the Teen Zone should add, Xbox 360 or PS3?

Teens and the Library Video Contest

Library Ninjas is a script written, directed and filmed by Brett, starring John and Derrek. The work isn't complete, simply an example video in the group you will submit your videos for the video contest - Teens and the Library. Create your video of 30 seconds up to a maximum of three minutes in length with the subject of teens and the library. Entrants must be age 12-18. You have from Friday, September 5, 2008 until midnight on Friday, October 10, 2008 to submit your video to http://www.youtube.com/group/centralteenzone. Grand prize is a Flip Ultra Video.

Library Ninjas was filmed during the Saturday program Society for the Study for Modern Visual Culture. It meets at 11:30 in Browning Events Room at Central Library.
