Today is the 151st birthday of the great American author Edith Wharton, admired as much now as she was during her lifetime for her wit, her brilliant social commentary, and her courage and determination to work as a writer in spite of the limited opportunities afforded to women of her elite upbringing during the Gilded Age.  You can find her best known works - The Age of Innocence (winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for fiction), Ethan Frome, The House of MirthThe Buccaneers - on our shelves in whatever format might suit your taste, from print to audiobook to ebook to movie.  Her autobiography and her short stories are here, too, including a compilation of the ghost stories that were so popular in her time.

On Valentine's Day we'll declare our fondness for Mrs. Wharton by discussing The House of Mirth, her first widely read, critically recognized novel. Published in 1905, it examines a beautiful young woman's struggle to secure her position in New York society's upper reaches and, at the same time, to discover her true self.  Please join us.

Let's play a literary version of the popular association game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.”  Here’s the Wikipedia explanation of the original idea.

Ready? Here goes:

How are best-selling writer Laura Lippman and Vernon Jordan, the first author to be selected for One Book, One Community of Southwestern Indiana, connected?

1.      In 2008, Laura Lippman’s What the Dead Know received the Anthony Award for Best Mystery Novel.

2.      Louise Penny, herself a recipient of several Anthony Awards, sets her Inspector Armand Gamache series in Three Pines, a small town outside of Quebec, Canada.

3.      Canada is the title of the latest book by Richard Ford, whose break-through novel was The Sportswriter.

4.      Sportswriter John Feinstein took a leave from absence from the Washington Post to research A Season on the Brink: a Year with Bob Knight and the Indiana Hoosiers, which topped the New York Times Bestseller List for 16 weeks in 1987.

5.      Preceding Feinstein’s book as #1 on the NYT Nonfiction Bestseller List was Fatherhood by Bill Cosby.

6.      While studying at Temple University, Bill Cosby joined Omega Psi Phi fraternity, whose list of notable members includes former National Urban League President Vernon Jordan, author of Vernon Can Read: a Memoir.

There you have it!

Why not give the game a try and share the results with us?  Send your list of 6 literary connections to pmc@evpl.org. We'll post them as we’re able.  Feel free to incorporate movies and music – anything that’s available in the library’s catalog.  Happy connecting!

(Thanks to readers' advisor superstar Sarah Statz Cords for this suggestion.)

In her novel Lavinia, celebrated author Ursula LeGuin gives lyrical voice to her title character: the daughter of mythical King Latinus and the woman fated to cause The Aeneid's culminating war.  This lushly detailed account of ancient Italian ritual and daily life, which was named a 2008 Best Book by Library Journal, is an intriguing companion to Virgil's epic poem.  Check them both out and join the Classics Book Discussion on December 13th as we consider one of the cornerstones of Western literature.

Based on this Courier-Journal review by Louisville attorney Richard Clay, I'm going to take a break from incessant TV election campaigning and get truly inspired to vote by visiting the Speed Art Museum. "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: American Art from the Yale University Art Gallery" runs from now through January 4, 2009.  Check the Planning a Visit page for directions and other suggestions for organizing an easy, top notch day trip.

While we're on the subject, here's a link from the library catalog to Vote: the Machinery of Democracy, an online, interactive exhibition from the National Museum of American History.

Paul Newman is an iconic figure in American film, and his life, times, and work figure significantly in the EVPL collection.  To be reminded of the breathtaking good looks and inspirational pursuits that made him a star both on and off the screen, take a look at Paul Newman, a Life in Pictures, edited by Yann-Brice Dherbier & Pierre-Henri Verlliac.

Here's what our Biography Resource Center database has to say about him.

And what will happen to Newman's Own, the food company founded by the actor in 1982 to fund his philanthropic causes?  CNN Money.com speculates in this article published earlier today.

My all-time favorite gardening website is that of the Missouri Botanical Garden.  I'm a frequent visitor to the Plantfinder and Plants of Merit databases accessible on its Gardening Help page as I look for trees, shrubs, and perennials that are well suited for our USDA plant hardiness zone.

I haven't yet visited this famous St. Louis attraction, but I have spent the day at the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest just south of Louisville.  It's trails and test gardens are another treasure trove for gardening information and ideas here in the Ohio River Valley.

On the third anniversary of the Gulf Coast devastation wreaked by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Foundation Center has put together a comprehensive portrait of the United States philanthropic response to the crisis.  This will be the first in a series of special reports from the Foundation Center on current events and the field of philanthropy.

So far I've managed to avoid blog-bragging about my new status as a grandparent, but a recent gift from a friend and fellow grandmother has convinced me to throw that resolution out the window.  Every grandparent needs to know about  Your Baby's First Year, Week by Week, such a great way to keep abreast of what that grandchild is up to.  Reading the chapters weekly gives far-flung family members a real-time connection to the many changes an infant goes through during the first exciting year of life.  My daughter, on the other hand, swears by What to Expect the First Year, which is organized on a month by month basis, and a quick look at the shelves here at the library indicates that there are lots of similar guides to choose from.  Let me know if you have a personal favorite.

SO... you have a great idea for making Evansville a better place to live but no clue of how to get a grassroots effort started...

EVPL is a Foundation Center Cooperating Collection

The Foundation Center now offers free training webinars for nonprofit organizations through its website, http://foundationcenter.org.  Click on a topic that interests you to learn more about the course and to see the scheduled instruction times.  Some of these sessions are being offered in Spanish, which should be of interest to our growing Spanish speaking community.  The webinars will change periodically, so check back occasionally. If a group is interested in a participating in one of these webinars in the Central Library Tech Center, let's talk about it at AskEVPL.

When you're ready to begin looking for project funding, come to Central Library to log into the Foundation Directory Online.  You'll have access to searchable information on over 92,000 foundations, corporate donors, and grantmaking public charities, including those that are located right here in the Tri-State area.  Because EVPL is a Foundation Center Cooperating Collection, use of this database won't cost a thing.

Auto maintenance manuals are right at the top of the list of the most checked out books in the EVPL collection.  An overlooked resource, though, for do-it-yourselfers as well as professional technicians, is our subscription to the Auto Repair Reference Center.  It's an electronic database available in the Research section of this website.  With your library card, you can access information on more than 33,000 vehicles manufactured from 1945 to the present, and you can conveniently reach it from your home or office computer.

The site includes thousands of technical service bulletins, recall notices and maintenance schedules, wiring diagrams, step-by-step photos and drawings, and a handy labor time estimator.  All this information is updated regularly by ASE certified technicians, so you know it can be trusted.
