The Indiana Department of Workforce Development's website has many useful links: for information about unemployment benefits go to uplink unemployment claim filing system, for contacting the WorkOne office in Evansville go to WorkOneworks.com, for career information in Indiana go to Indianacareerconnect.com. You can use the EVPL computers to access the Indiana Department of Workforce Development's website, file for unemployment benefits, research companies, submit an online job application, develop a resume, etc.

The New York Times Historical  (1851-2004) offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. It is available through our databases pages and can be accessed outside of the library with an EVPL library card. I received a call today asking for information about Jesse Walker, an Evansville native who committed a crime in New York in 1919 and was subsequently sent to Sing Sing Prison and excuted.  Although I couldn't find any articles in our Evansville newspaper index, I was able to find his obituary in the Browning Genealogy Database. The Browning Genealogy Database is the lifetime work of Charles Browning, who compiled the obituary records of Vanderburgh County and surrounding southwestern Indiana from Evansville newspapers. Here is an example of a citation from the New York Times Historical:

BOY MURDERER DIES IN SING SING CHAIR; United States Senators Fail to Win Commutation for Jesse Walker. LAST WORDS FOR MOTHER Companion Also Under Death Sentence for Killing Stationer in Attempt at Robbery.Special to The New York Times. February 11, 1921, Friday Page 7, 567 words.

One of my favorite EVPL databases is Issues and Controversies. A recent reference query led me to use this great resource. Over the phone, a young customer needed articles about how the body image of girls is distorted because of the modeling industry. I told her about all of our databases and that she could find articles using her computer outside the library. I refined the search to contain the words "teenage body image" and came up with some articles using Masterfile Premier. I then tried Issues and Controversies and came up with the following article: Thin Fashion Models. The article seemed to be exactly what she needed. If you have a library card, you can access the databases from outside the library. If you need assistance with this, just call the Information Center Desk at Central Library at 428-8218 and we'll be happy to help you.

EVPL subscribes to many databases and one of our newest databases is the Encyclopedia of Associations: A comprehensive guide to International, National, and State associations, with brief histories, addresses, and current contact information, current membership numbers and annual meeting information.

Use the Basic Search form for simple searches by name or keyword. Go to Advanced Search for precision searching by industry, geography, or the many other unique data fields supported by individual directory titles. The directories available for searching include 755,300 entries. When doing a search you must select: Include both current and backfile directories.

The Angel ExperimentMy 14 year old son is a reluctant reader and I just had to announce that he devoured the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. I have since gone on the Internet to find read-alikes and thought I would include a link to a site that I found. You could also try Novelist, a database that EVPL subscribes to, to find similar books and/or lists of books for reluctant readers.

The Quitclaim Deed is a legal form that we are asked about quite frequently. Just this morning a customer came in to get a copy of a Quitclaim Deed. The Recorder's Office told her to go to the library to get a copy of the form. I was glad that she gave me that tidbit of information as I usually find a generic blank Quitclaim form on the Internet or I find one in a legal form book. I went to the Vanderburgh County Recorder's Office website and found not only a Quitclaim Deed specific to Indiana, but many forms that we may find useful in the future.

I have been hearing a lot about the Pickens Energy Plan. His plan calls for more wind power to generate electricity and the use of domestic natural gas and biofuels for transportation. I have seen a lot of wind farms popping up around the midwest on my travels and am hopeful that this will alleviate some of our dependence on foreign oil.

My 16 year old just got her license yesterday and drove to school for the first time today. Getting her license has been a year in the making with driver's education, taking the driving test and the written test. In Indiana, new drivers are required to wait 30 days after their birthday to get their license and an additional 90 days before they can have anyone under 21 in the car with them. Seems like a pretty good rule to me! http://www.in.gov/bmv/3250.htm

The 2nd floor kiosk display is highlighting books about China the week of August 9-15. The website that will be featured on the EVPL homepage is: The Official Website of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games August 8-24, 2008. The website features news, schedules and results, medal counts, information about athletes and teams and much more. Having just been in China July 6-17, it is very exciting to see many of the sites that I saw in person. While in Beijing, we went to see the Bird's Nest and the Watercube at night. We have also been watching the Travel Channel a lot and I think Samantha Brown  followed us around in Beijing when she did her Passport to China episodes. Feel free to visit the featured website and the kiosk this week and enjoy watching the Olympics.
