Why did it take so long? The Harry Potter titles haven't been available in digital formats until now. They released to the general public on Tuesday, with availability to libraries starting yesterday.

Now that they're available in digital formats, will you be reading/re-reading these books?

What has your experience been with e-readers?

I use the eReader app and the Kindle for iPhone app on my iTouch, but it is too small for me to use on a regular basis. Still, it is great for an emergency book, and while traveling. The backlit screen even lets me read at night in the hotel room without bothering others who are sleeping.

Revolutionary Road - movie not as good as audiobook

I just finished listening to Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates on Overdrive audio download which I transferred to my mp3 player. The reader, Mark Bramhall does a wondeful job of nailing Frank Wheeler's patronizing cynical attitude toward everyone and everything. He even captures April his wife, their neighbors and even the real estate agent with equal precision. The book was well written and told a coherent story. But now back to the movie. The movie is at best confusing and at worst badly miscast. Leonardo DiCaprio's Frank just looks too young and Kate Winslett has always looked a little on the matronly side to me. And as far as I could tell most of the performances seemed really forced and as my husband would say "N.B." (that means "Not Believable"). So many little important parts were left out of the movie that when it was over my own mother commented "I don't even know what happened." I had listened to the book so I could fill in the blanks but the movie seemed to start in the middle and then unsuccessfully work its way to the beginning and then finally got around to a totally anti-climactic ending.

I'd have to give it a "thumbs down".

Now You Can Download eBooks to Your Sony® Reader!

EVPL customers have been asking about when they'll be able to load eBooks onto their Sony® Readers or Amazon Kindles. Beginning May 15th, they can start downloading eBooks to the Sony® Readers, thanks to the availability of eBooks from OverDrive in the new Adobe® EPUB format.

On the OverDrive pages, there is an entire page devoted to frequently asked questions about the EPUB format, as well a page listing all of the titles available for download in the new format.

Due to Digital Rights Management (DRM) issues, and the fact that it was primarily invented to push proprietary content, the Amazon Kindle is not supported by any format currently provided by OverDrive. Also, early reviews about difficulty migrating Kindle 1 content to the Kindle 2 device should give avid readers pause when it comes to investing in a Kindle.

More MP3 audiobooks available for download

The Library has added 89 new MP3 format audiobook titles to our OverDrive@ EVPL downloadable collection, many of them spiritual and new age titles from ChristianAudio, Zondervan, Sounds True, and Hay House publishers. We've also added several new titles from Books in Motion, Blackstone Audio, Tantor Media, Weston Woods, and the AudioBookshelf.

In addition to new MP3 format audiobooks, several new Windows Media Player audiobooks have been added, many of them recent Bestseller titles that are not available in the MP3 format, such as 3 Willows, Agincourt, The Associate, Beat the Reaper, Dark of Night, Mounting Fears, The Piano Teacher, and What I Did for Love. We've also added several new eBooks in the PDF format, including The House of Mirth (a book discussion title at the North Park Branch), The Breakthrough, Broken Open, Devil of the Highlands, Fireside, The Inheritance, and Wicked Game.

There were no new MP3-format audiobooks available to purchase. This continues to be frustrating, especially now that OverDrive has released their OverDrive Media Console for Macs (see ProfessorKnows-It-All's blog post). Nora Rawlinson, who was a Library Journal editor editor-in-chief of Publishers Weekly for 12 years, recently posted about this issue in her EarlyWord blog:

Unfortunately, there are fewer titles available from OverDrive in Mac's MP3 format than there are in the Microsoft format (Windows Media Audio, or WMA), which is often difficult to explain to library customers.

In order to make titles available in MP3, publishers must be willing to offer titles without Digital Rights Management software (the software that puts limits on how the audio can be used). This is because Apple software can only read titles encrypted with Apple's DRM, available exclusively on titles downloaded through iTunes and Audible. Thus, OverDrive cannot encrypt DRM on titles in MP3 format the way they can titles in the Windows format.

Many publishers have been reluctant to give up DRM for fear of piracy (true, publishers don't seem overly worried that CD's can be ripped and downloaded, but that takes a bit more effort). Random House recently made their titles DRM-free, so they could be sold to iPod users through more vendors than Audible and iTunes. However, they specifically excluded libraries from this arrangement, because, they said in their press release, without DRM, there's no way to limit "borrowing privileges."

Until Apple makes its DRM software available to other vendors, or until all publishers make their titles available DRM free to libraries, you will have to continue to try to explain why iPod users can only download a limited number of titles.

OverDrive @ EVPL now Mac compatible!

OverDrive @ EVPL is a collection of downloadable materials (including audiobooks, eBooks, movies, & music) available free of charge to all EVPL cardholders. Since launch, patrons with Windows PCs have been downloading countless items from this digital collection...unforunately, Mac users were out of luck.

That is no more, as a Mac version of the OverDrive Media Console (the software required to download items) has just been released! Mac users can now download MP3 audiobooks and transfer them to iPods.

Unfortunately, there are a couple caveats for Mac users:

OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks are the ONLY compatible format available for Mac users. OverDrive WMA Audiobooks, OverDrive Music, & OverDrive Video all use Microsoft-based DRM and therefore are not compatible with Macs. Unless Apple were to license this DRM, which is very unlikely, these formats will never be playable on Macs.
OverDrive Media Console (aka OMC) for Macs can only transfer content to Apple iPods. Transferring to a MP3 player/portable device other than an iPod requires the Windows version of OMC, which only runs on Windows-based PCs.
OMC is unable to transfer content to the iPod Shuffle. Owners of these devices can transfer content to their device using iTunes.
Windows users with iPods will continue to use the Windows version of OMC to transfer content to their device. The Windows version of OMC is also compatible with a wide variety of additional devices, including the Microsoft Zune, Creative Zen series, and more.

Now, I know that finding ways to download music for free that's not intended to be downloaded for free carries with it all the thrill of the forbidden (like ripping the tag off your mattress or running with scissors) but have you ever tried downloading for free without the risk of being subpoenaed later? We recently added music downloads in OverDrive and are in the process of building the collection.
