Support EVPL & save money with a free home energy assessment

With the record-breaking temps we've had this summer, many are looking for ways to reduce their utility bills.

Energizing Indiana offers free home energy assessments to those who apply. An Energy Advisor will visit your home to perform the assessment. You'll receive step-by-step guidance; energy saving products, such as CFL bulbs, low-flow faucet aerators & shower heads, and insulation for your water heater; and a comprehensive report detailing additional ways to make your home more energy efficient.

This service is free, and the library Foundation will receive $25 for every energy assessment conducted through EVPL. Reduce your energy costs while helping our library Foundation!

Make a Dried Flower Creation

Have you ever wanted to make a keepsake from your dried flowers? Local artist, Debbie Jacobs will show us how at the next Savvy Senior Series program. Come join us to learn tachniques and make a dried flower creation of your own.

This program will be in Central Library's Browning Events Room on Wednesday, June 13 at 6:30 PM.

Make A Beautiful Organza Brooch

At this week's Savvy Senior Series program, we are learning to make a brooch out of organza. Please join us and design your very own beautiful brooch to wear this summer.

Carriage House Apartments at 5300 Carriage Drive is hosting this program at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 17th.

Evansville is one of 6 international finalists in Google's 2012 "Model Your Town Competition."

Evansville native Randall Crane created a 3D model of Evansville's downtown using Google SketchUp and Google Earth. Google selected Randall's model as one of 6 finalists from a pool of 200+ entries submitted worldwide.

It's now a popularity contest, with the public being able to vote for their favorite. The winner will receive a $25,000 prize for local schools from Google, Inc. The deadline for voting is May 1st, so let's get those votes in!

April Bad Movie Night

The Mystery Science Theater version of the 1975 movie Mitchell is considered one of the best by a vast majority of MST3K fans. Joe Don Baker plays Mitchell--- a sleazy, alcoholic cop who punches and shoots his way through the plot while trying to solve a murder. From the lame car chases, to the scenes of Mitchell dozing on the job, and his truly unbelievable love scene with Linda Evans, this movie is hilarious from beginning to end.

Come join us and see for yourself how really bad a movie can be!

Thursday, April 12 at 6:00 PM in Browning Room B at Central Library.

Astronomy Revisited

Are you over 50? Have you ever wondered how many new astronomical discoveries have been made since you were in school? This Thursday, March 15 the Savvy Senior Series will present "What We Know Now: Significant Astronomical Discoveries Made Since You Were in School."

This program will be held at Central Library in the Browning Events Room at 2:00 PM and will be presented by Mitch Luman from the Evansville Museum.

Come join us for an informative afternoon. No reservations are required. As always, this program is free and open to the public.

War and Our Communities: the 2012 Community Read

The Community Read is a community project where various groups read The Things They Carried, written by Vietnam War veteran Tim O'Brien, and discuss the effects of serving in an active combat zone, how it affects soldiers and their families, and how the community can help ease veterans' reintegration.

The Reader's Guide describes the book:

Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried (1990) is considered one of the finest books about the Vietnam War. Far from a combat story of pride and glory, it is a compassionate tale of the American soldier, brimming with raw honesty and thoughtful reflection.

The book's narrator follows a platoon of infantrymen through the jungles of Vietnam. We see them trudge through the muck of a constant downpour, get hit by sniper fire, pull body parts out of a tree, laugh while they tell their stories to each other, and fall silent when faced with making sense of it all-both in the moment and twenty years later.

The book is available at EVPL. Book discussions are being held at two EVPL locations:

Dr. Charlotte Reisinger and Dr. Dusky Farmer are presenting, “Oh My Aching Feet: Age Related Foot Problems” at River Pointe Health Campus on Thursday, February 9 at 2:00 PM. This program is free and open to the public.

Don't Miss Bad Movie Night!

Do you need a good laugh? Are you ready to see just how bad a “Bad Movie” can be? The next movie in the “Bad Movie Night” series is Mystery Science Theater 3000’s “The Skydivers” (1963) -- a gem from Coleman Francis. This film has huge lapses in plot, continuity, and acting ability which make it a favorite.

There will also be a hilarious bonus short called “Why Study Industrial Arts” that sets the mood for the feature film
