In the past few weeks since my last blog post, I have been on a chick-lit rampage. I have been speed-reading through recent releases like I don't have a hundred other things to do. Laundry piled up, kitchen didn't get cleaned, and packing for my move didn't happen. These three books are part of the reason that I have been slacking.

Prospect Park West by Amy Sohn takes place in Brooklyn's prosperous Park Slope neighborhood. The lives of four women intersect as they deal with husbands, children, and playground politics. Not earth-shattering reading, but worth a chance if you have the time.

Mercury in Retrograde by Paula Froelich has a cover strikingly similar to Prospect Park West. Froelich's novel takes place across the bridge in Manhattan where three women who are down on their luck join forces to get their lives back in order. The ending is pretty predictable, but it is an enjoyable read.

Going across the pond to England, Sophie Kinsella's latest book, Twenties Girl, introduces us to Sadie, a wild flapper from the 1920s and her great-niece, Lara, living in present-day London. Sadie has passed away alone in a retirement home, but her spirit remains on Earth pushing Lara to find who stole Sadie's prized possession. True to Kinsella form, this book is laugh out loud funny and highly recommended.

Happy Reading!

Hester Browne

If you haven't read anything by Hester Browne, then you need to go to the nearest library and check one of her books out! Browne has written a hilarious series that begins with The Little Lady Agency. The story begins with Melissa Romney-Jones, a Londoner who has once again been fired from her job. In order to find more permanent employment, Melissa looks up her old etiquette teacher who serves as a companion for older men. A few dates into the job, however, Melissa finds out her job wasn't exactly what she thought! Determined to help those men who are quite helpless, Melissa starts her own business- The Little Lady Agency- to help men figure out their wardrobes, how to act on dates, etc. All is going along swimmingly until Melissa meets American Jonathan Riley. As Melissa struggles to get her company going, she also struggles to keep her attraction to Jonathan under control. Melissa's story continues in Little Lady, Big Apple and The Little Lady Agency and the Prince. Now that she is off the singles market, Melissa tries to figure out how to balance her business of helping bachelors while keeping a boyfriend.

In June 2009, Browne published a new stand-alone book. After waiting for weeks on the hold list (even librarians have to wait for the good books), I eagerly started reading The Finishing Touches this weekend. Browne has done it again! Not only does the book have laugh-out-loud moments, but there is also a bit of seriousness thrown in as well. Twenty-seven years ago a baby was left outside the Phillimore Academy for Young Ladies with a note and a small bee pendant. Betsy grows up in the shadows of the Academy walls anticipating the day she will become one of the Phillimore girls. Imagine her shock when her adoptive parents decide she is "not that type of girl" and send her off to university. Twelve years later Betsy returns after the death of her adoptive mother in hopes of bringing the Academy into the modern age and finding her real parents.

If you're looking for a new author that will make you laugh and feel a little weepy, check out any of the Hester Browne books.

"Brick Lane" -- the book and the movie

If you LOVED the book, should you see the movie? In this case the answer is YES.

British author Monica Ali's beloved novel, "Brick Lane," won all sorts of awards and made numerous top ten lists when it was published in 2003. Critics praised it and readers embraced it.

Now this story of a Bangladeshi teenager named Nazneen who, after an arranged marriage to a man more than twice her age, ends up making a life in London's East End has been made into a movie just released on DVD.

The novel weaves all the BIG issues -- racism, religious and cultural differences, class divides, love vs. passion, responsiblity, the immigrant experience, and the pull of family -- into Naznee's faltering steps toward self-expression and self-reliance.

Of course, the movie can't include all the detail of the 400 page book, but it is a faithful recreation of the novel's main threads. It is a touching and beautiful little movie.

"Run Fatboy, Run" limps to the finish line

I've always been a fan of Simon Pegg's work. In his previous efforts (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, & Spaced), Pegg & co-star Nick Frost teamed up with absolutely hilarious results!

Run Fatboy, Run is Pegg's latest film...and unfortunately it doesn't live up to its predecessors.

Pegg portrays Dennis, who gets cold feet on his wedding day and leaves his pregnant fiancée, Libby, at the altar.

Five years later... Of course, Dennis has become an out-of-shape loser with a crummy job. Dennis & Libby share custody of their child, and he now realizes the mistake in not going through with the wedding. However, Libby is now dating Whit, who is everything Dennis is not: successful, wealthy, dedicated, etc. After discovering Whit is an athlete and will be running in an upcoming marathon, Dennis decides to run in it as well, proving to Libby that he he has changed and can actually finish something he starts.

Cue the cheesy training montages. Dennis' friend Gordon and his landlord Mr. Goshdashtidar (a stereotypical foreigner) whip him into shape, transforming him from a fat boy into...well...less of a fat boy.

Does Dennis finish the marathon? Is it enough to win back Libby? How ridiculous is this plot?

I understand that most movies require suspension of disbelief (an out-of-shape guy can train for a marathon in less than a month?), but that's not the problem I have with this film. In an attempt to be a family-friendly romantic comedy, the humor has been degraded to the level of a bad Adam Sandler flick; nothing but predictable, juvenile humor. Gone is the gut-busting humor, witty dialog, and endearing characters the viewer actually cares about, all of which were present in Pegg's previous efforts.

If you've never seen Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, or Spaced, you'll probably enjoy Run Fatboy, Run more than I did. Otherwise, you'll be extremely disappointed.

Protagonist decides he wants to steal something.

Protagonist assembles a team of wacky miscreants, each with their own special "talents".

More planning. Montage of the team practicing, usually set to driving techno music or Elvis' "A Little Less Conversation".

As the day draws near, something is discovered that throws a wrench in the plan. Oh noes! Back to the drawing board.

Cut to the execution. They pull it off using some "OMIGOSH! I cannot believe they just did that!" tactic completely out of left field.

Everyone lives happily ever after, with no repercussions for their lawbreaking.

So when watching The Bank Job, I was expecting the same cookie-cutter formula, along with Jason Statham beating up random people (ala The Transporter I/II & Crank). I was relieved when my expectations weren't true.

Based on the true story of the Lloyd's Bank robbery in 1971, The Bank Job tells the tale of Terry Leather (Statham), a former criminal now-turned-family man trying to make ends meet. With shady debt collectors breathing down his neck, he's ready for a change. In walks his former love Martine with an offer he cannot refuse...

Martine has intel that a London Bank will be alarm-less over a weekend, and that looting a vault of safe deposit boxes (full of millions of cash & jewelry) would be an untraceable crime. Terry, a desperate man looking for cash, agrees to the gig. Cue assembling the team of wacky miscreants!

The team successfully pulls off the heist without being caught. And then the movie's only halfway over. WHAT?!? The rest of the movie deals with the repurcussions of the heist. Turns out Martine had been hired by the British Secret Service to raid the safe deposit box of a militant revolutionary, to retrieve "compromising" photos of British royalty. Also unbeknownst to the robbers are additional "lewd" photos of high-ranking government officials, as well as ledger books containing payouts to crooked cops, now in their possession. The 2nd half of the movie involves the deposit box owners trying to get their "goods" back from the robbers, and what a wild ride it is!

The movie starts out slow and a bit confusing...a bunch of characters and different subplots are all introduced right at the beginning. I liked this presentation, as it gives you just enough information to keep you interested until you find out what exactly is going on. Some viewers may not like this style, however. Also, accents are fully-British, and at several parts I felt like turning on the subtitles.

But overall, this is a great movie. It breaks the mold of other heist flicks, is thoroughly engaging, and proves that Jason Statham is more skilled than his typical beat-up-everything-that-moves roles would suggest.

Alice Hoffman has long been one of my favorite authors. But the truth is that I have grown a bit weary of the atmospheric, otherworldy touches that are entangled into every scene in every novel.

So I was pleasantly surprised to read this intricately woven story of three women whose lives are connected by family and circumstance -- with only one minor ghost muddying the reality.

Much of the action takes place in a fictional London hotel patterned after the legendary and bohemian Chelsea Hotel in NYC. Spanning the last few decades, each of the three sections of the novel sheds more light on the puzzle of how and why these women's lives turned out like they did.

This is a book to be savored and, perhaps, reread. You might want to keep a pad and paper at hand to jot down names and details.

Oh, and a juvenile John Lennon shows up briefly -- but I will let you find him yourself.
