James Bethel Gresham
An Evansville Hero, 1893 - 1917

James Bethel Gresham began the first years of his life on a farm in a one-room log cabin before moving to the west side of Evansville to attend school & hold various jobs. Gresham enlisted in the War in 1914, at age 21, only to die a young solider three years later on November 3rd, 1917. James Bethel Gresham became recognized by the United States government as the first American casualty of World War I. A memorial was built in his honor in Evansville in the form of a new home for his mother, Alice Dodd.
