The EVPL is 100 years old this year, and we're going to party! Take a look back at our history and join us for special activities & events throughout the year.

Centennial Celebration activities are sponsored by the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library Foundation and the Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award.

EVPL Centennial Collection

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library first opened on January 1, 1913.

To celebrate 100 years of service to the community, the EVPL Centennial Digital Collection uses photographs, annual reports, and other items of note to demonstrate the history of the library and all of the services it has offered over the last 100 years.

Letterboxing & Geocaching

Begins Sunday, February 10

These activities combine a bit of the past with the present. Similar to a treasure hunt game, letterboxing players are guided by clues & geocachers use technology to find their "treasures". Load the whole family into the car and see where you end up!

Letterboxing, started in 1854, involves using a compass, a rubber stamp, and a logbook. Go to atlasquest.com to see clues that will guide you to a hidden letterbox. Once you've found it, stamp your logbook with the hand-carved stamp inside the letterbox as "proof" that you found it. The EVPL has created letterboxes for each library in its system. Geocaching uses GPS-enabled devices to help participants find specific coordinates marking a spot where a geocache is hidden. Sign up for a free geocaching membership at geocaching.com, grab your GPS-enabled device (like a smartphone or handheld GPS device), and start searching for the geocaches that are hidden at each EVPL location. Search for geocaches in the area and find clues to help you locate the caches at geocaching.com.

Alan McPherson will be a special guest at the Public Library Friends Annual Meeting. This meeting is open to the public and all are invited.

McPherson, author of Temples of Knowledge: Andrew Carnegie's Gift to Indiana, will speak about Carnegie libraries and how many of these historic buildings are being used today.
