Next Steps in Knitting: Making a Shawl
Tuesday, April 4, 2017
10:00am - 11:00am
North Park - Meeting Room
Add to your knitting skills with this Next Steps in Knitting class for folks already comfortable with the knit and purl stitches. We will be knitting flat on circular needles, because while the shawl begins small, casting on only 5 stitches, each row adds a stitch on one edge of the project, while every other row decreases a stitch on the other edge. When knit with self-striping yarn, the finished project is an elegant scarf/shawl that looks much more difficult than it is. A sample is available to see at the Adult Information Desk.
In this class you will knit either a scarf or shawl, depending on how large you wish the item to be. You may choose a thinner, fingering yarn and a size 4 - 24 inch circular needle, or knit with a bulkier Aran/worsted weight yarn and a size 7 - 32 inch circular needle, which will knit up faster, and make a warmer shawl, rather than a lightweight, accent-type accessory. The first class will cover casting on, the necessary increases and decreases, and knitting flat on circular needles. Subsequent classes will address problems that come up, continuing information on the pattern used in the projects, and changing to a second ball of yarn. The final class will go over finishing a project, blocking the finished item, and other ways to use the techniques learned in this class.
For this class, you must supply needles and yarn, and we will supply the pattern. Contact Nancy when you register to choose a project, and she will provide you with a supply list. If you have problems providing supplies, Nancy may be able to help.
