EVPL Toolbar
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What are the system requirements for the EVPL Toolbar?
- A computer with an Internet connection (DSL, cable, dial-up, etc.)
- Windows 2000, XP, or Vista
- A compatible web browser
- Internet Explorer 6 or newer
- Firefox 2 (Firefox 3 compatibility coming soon!)
- Approximately 5 MB of available hard-drive space.
The EVPL Toolbar can only be installed on personal computers and laptops. It cannot be installed on in-library computers.
2. Does the EVPL Toolbar contain any kind of spyware, adware, or viruses?
Absolutely not! The EVPL Toolbar has been created with a program called
Toolbar Studio. This is the same software that AOL, T-Mobile, IBM, ICQ, and Skype have used to create their own spyware/adware/virus-free toolbars.
3. I'm concerned about privacy. Does the EVPL Toolbar transmit information about my web browsing history or other personal information to the EVPL?
No. The EVPL does not collect or transmit any personal data with the EVPL Toolbar. In fact, there are only five instances where the EVPL Toolbar actually connects to the internet:
- A link is selected after clicking the down arrow on the
button. The toolbar requests the appropriate URL on the EVPL website and the page is loaded in your browser window.
- A catalog search is performed. The toolbar submits your search term to the online catalog and the results are displayed in your browser window.
- If the scrolling ticker is enabled, a webpage on the EVPL website containing the ticker is loaded into the toolbar when you first open your browser. The ticker does not constantly communicate back to the EVPL; it is updated ONLY when a browser window is first opened.
- The toolbar will check for updates every 24 hours. When an update for the toolbar is available, the toolbar will prompt you to update; upon choosing "Yes", you'll connect to our website again to download and install the update. Please read our License Agreeement for more information.
- The user opts to manually check for and install updates using the
menu.
4. Will the EVPL Toolbar slow down my computer and/or internet connection?
The EVPL Toolbar is not resource intensive, so it will not cause noticeable slowness on most modern computers. Consisting of an XML file, a few lines of code, and a Javascript ticker, the EVPL Toolbar runs well on a wide variety of systems.
5. Can the EVPL Toolbar be uninstalled easily?
Yes. The EVPL Toolbar can be temporarily hidden by disabling it within your browser or permanently removed from your system via the "Add or Remove Programs" wizard in the Windows Control Panel (for Internet Explorer) or via the Tools-->Add-Ons menu (for Firefox).
6. I'm having problems with the EVPL Toolbar, or my question is not answered here. How can I get assistance?
Please visit the
Ask EVPL page to submit your question. You'll receive a response via email.
