Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 when Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to designate National Hispanic Heritage Week. It was expanded into a month-long celebration two decades later. Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes and celebrates the contributions of Americans who trace roots through Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America, and Spanish-speaking countries in the Caribbean. September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month because it is closely tied to the anniversary of multiple countries’ independence. The celebration ends on October 15.
EVPL will be honoring and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with virtual programs and other content. Staff members have created videos on preparing Hispanic food dishes, creating traditional Hispanic crafts, and storytimes in Spanish and English. EVPL will also host book talks and other special events virtually throughout the month.
