Autumn is upon us! For many of us, that means donning oversized sweaters, grabbing the latest cookbook on soups and stews, and curling up on the couch to watch our favorite ’90s Halloween movies. I’ve curated a list of some of the best that EVPL has in our DVD collection. From family-friendly spooky comedies to slasher/horror cult classics, there’s something for everyone!
Family Friendly
This fantasy-comedy follows a teenage boy named Max who unintentionally resurrects three witches on Halloween night in Salem, Massachusetts. In order to not disintegrate, they must take the souls of the children in Salem.
When Kat Harvey and her father, paranormal therapist James Harvey, move into Whipstaff Manor in Friendship, Maine, she is befriended by a ghost named Casper. While her father has therapy sessions with the comedic Ghostly Trio, Casper and Kat learn more about the house and Casper’s life.
The Addams Family follows members of an aristocratic family that are focused on all things creepy and macabre. When a potential long-lost relative shows up, the family works to figure out if he is in fact who he says he is.
Double, Double, Toil and Trouble (1993)
This made for TV film starring the Olsen twins follows sisters who discover that their great aunt has been trapped and cursed by her evil twin. They must work together to break the curse or she is doomed to spend eternity in the netherworld!
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Tim Burton’s cult-classic, musical animation follows the King of Halloween Town, Jack Skellington, as he accidentally comes upon a portal to Christmas Town. He increasingly becomes obsessed with bringing Christmas to Halloween Town and taking over the holiday.
After years of being forbidden to celebrate Halloween, Marnie discovers she comes from a family of witches when her grandmother comes to visit. Marnie and her siblings secretly follow their grandmother home to Halloweentown, a town of witches, goblins, and all sorts of magical creatures. While discovering their true identities, the siblings also must save Halloweentown from a mysterious hooded figure.
In this Disney Channel Original, three pre-teens discover a mummy while exploring. While they’re first afraid, they grow fond of the mummy, giving him a name and taking him into one of their homes. Trying to learn more about their new friend, they discover that the mummy must be placed back into his sarcophagus by midnight on Halloween or he will disappear forever.
Teens and Adults
Sarah Bailey starts at a new school where she meets three teenage outcasts who allegedly take part in witchcraft. Forming a friendship with the trio, the girls work together to explore witchcraft for their own self interests, unaware that it will come with some serious repercussions.
Two sisters who were raised in a supernatural family of witches must fight to break the family curse: any men they love are ill-fated to die. Though very different, they must work together or the entire family could be doomed.
This Wes Craven slasher follows a teenage girl and her friends who become the targets of a crazed killer called Ghostface who plays deadly games with the group while donning a Halloween costume. Full of mystery, gore, and dark comedy, the film has earned its place as a cult classic.
The Inventor, a man with ambitions to create an artificial man, has almost completed his creation of Edward. Dying before he can finish, Edward is left with blades in place of hands. Taken in by a suburban family, Edward falls in love with teenager Kim, which makes her boyfriend feel jealous and threatened.
Adapted from Washington Irving’s short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, the movie is set in 1799 and focuses on a detective sent to the village of Sleepy Hollow to investigate murders committed by a headless horseman.
