SPEAK is a lecture and discussion series that aims to bring in authors, thought leaders, and speakers each year. We hope to engage the youth of our community by bringing in at least one youth-oriented speaker per year.
Through the SPEAK initiative, EVPL hopes to further our vision of communities united through shared exploration and understanding by supporting and encouraging conversation. Empathy and compassion are grown through words, whether spoken or written. SPEAK encourages our community to speak up and speak together.
To financially support SPEAK, you can donate to the EVPL Foundation.
Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Carole Lindstrom will be the next featured presenter in Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library’s SPEAK: An Explorative Lecture Series.
On Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 pm in the Browning Rooms of EVPL Central, Carole Lindstrom will speak about her book, We Are Water Protectors, and her experiences as a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe Indians.
Carole is Anishinabe/Metis and is tribally enrolled with the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe. She was born and raised in Nebraska and currently makes her home in Maryland.
Carole has been a voracious reader and library geek ever since she was growing up in Nebraska. On weekends you could usually find her at the library lost in the book stacks or holed up in her bedroom with a good book. It wasn’t until she had her son, that she discovered her love of writing for children and began to work seriously on her writing.
We Are Water Protectors is the 2021 Caldecott Medal winner, awarded to the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Prior to the SPEAK event, we will have several programs for library users of all ages to explore the book’s theme of environmental stewardship.
