For EVPL’s littlest patrons, we are excited to offer a new adventure to help them prepare for school! EVPL is proud to bring 1OOO Books Before Kindergarten to our community.  Kindergarten can be a difficult transition period as children adjust to the structure of half-day or full-day learning. EVPL offers many programs for children to help develop skills that will assist with school readiness, and we are very excited to announce this early literacy program beginning in January 2019!

It is well known that parents and guardians are a child’s first teachers. Families can promote their child’s literacy development in many ways, and EVPL wants to help you in your journey with the implementation of 1OOO Books Before Kindergarten. This program celebrates reading accomplishments before a child enters kindergarten. By reading one book a day, a child will have heard 1,000 stories by the time they reach three-years-old.

To sign up for 1OOO Books Before Kindergarten, families can visit any EVPL location or create a Beanstack account. The reading guide can be picked up or printed off, so that your reading journey can begin.  When your child reaches goals along the way, they will receive a small prize for their accomplishment. On completion of the program, children will receive a prize and their picture on EVPL social media (with guardian permission).

We want to celebrate your family’s achievement in recognizing the importance of reading at an early age!

EVPL is excited to help your child develop school readiness and make their first day of kindergarten a success.  We are here with you and your child along the way.  Happy reading!

How it works:

  1. Register at any Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library location or register on Beanstack. You will receive a reading log and a list of reading suggestions.
  2. For each book you read, color in a numbered space object.
  3. Your child will earn an out-of-this-world patch at 100, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 books.
  4. When you reach 1,000 books, your child will also get a shout-out on EVPL social media (with your permission, of course).
