Saturday, January 27, two EVPL locations will host Holocaust Remembrance Day events; other EVPL displays, exhibits and collections also recognize this worldwide observance.

The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This date is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camps in 1945.

EVPL Stringtown will feature Some Were Neighbors, an image exhibit from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, which will be on display from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.  Members of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra will perform while library users view the exhibit which, according to the description, “asks how something like the Holocaust could happen, and empowers each one of us, underscoring that our choices do matter.”

EVPL Oaklyn will host an all-day event, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. featuring a book display, testimonies, and local connections to Holocaust survivors.  Also, each EVPL location has created special book displays related to the Holocaust.

In addition, the Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive at EVPL Central holds DVD-ROM recordings of more than 115 interviews of Holocaust survivors and witnesses from Indiana, Kentucky, and parts of Illinois. The Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation was established by movie director Steven Spielberg in 1994.  The collection at EVPL is in partnership with CYPRESS (Committee to Promote Respect in Schools), which encourages respect for diversity among all people, especially children, through lessons of the Holocaust.

Recently, Erik Estep, EVPL Local History Librarian, shared more information about the Shoah Foundation collection.  You can view that interview here.
