As with many other programs and events, the 2021 Meet Your Legislators sessions will be a little different this year. The annual event is normally held at EVPL Central and sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Southwestern Indiana, Evansville Teachers Association, Plumbers & Steamfitters, Local 136, Teamsters Local 215, United Neighborhoods of Evansville, and Valley Watch.
“Let’s hope 2021 brings health and an end to our social distancing restrictions. Since we know that we won’t be out of the woods the first quarter of 2021, we have decided it is in everyone’s best interest to cancel the traditional MYL for 2021. 2021 will be an important legislative year. It’s the budget session and redistricting maps will be drawn. Even though we can’t have the typical MYL, we are committed to facilitating exchanges between the public and Senators and Representatives to the General Assembly. Information about how to track key bills and meeting times and places for committees will be available on our local League website and our LWVSWIN Facebook page.”
The Indiana General Assembly’s website is an invaluable tool for following the 2021 Legislative Session.
The website has an upcoming meetings section on the homepage. This will tell you what time and day sessions and committees are meeting. It also includes a video icon next to it so that you are able to watch the live stream, though it does usually run slightly behind.
Watch Live: Senate | Watch Live: House | Video Archive
On the homepage, you will also see multiple tabs and a search bar. You can search and follow session, committees, legislation, legislators, and Indiana code here.
The standing committees section will contain information about the committees being heard during session.
You can search bills by number, legislator, or subject.
When you click on a bill it will give you the text of the bill and also what actions have been taken on it which can be located on the left-hand side. While there will not be any information at this time, both the committee and bill sections will be updated regularly.
In the search bar you can look up anything that is on the website but you can specifically narrow it to search Indiana Code, bills, or legislators.
The League of Women Voters of Indiana are tracking a number of bills. They are tracking for these advocacy areas: voter services, redistricting, natural resources and the environment, women’s health, education, and gun safety.
You can also track your local legislators to find out what bills they are involved in.
With 8 locations throughout Vanderburgh County, EVPL is ready to discover, explore, and connect WITH you! We encourage you to uncover new things, revisit old favorites, and to engage with us along the way.
