A Notary Public is a public officer of the state, authorized by law to certify documents, take affidavits, and administer oaths.

EVPL offers Notary services free of charge at several of our locations: EVPL Central, EVPL McCollough, EVPL North Park, EVPL Red Bank, and EVPL West.

  • EVPL Central: A notary will be available on a drop-in basis:
    • 9:00 – 11:00 am on Tuesdays, please see the information desk on the second floor
    • 3:00 – 5:00 pm on Thursdays, please see the information desk on the second floor
  • EVPL McCollough, North Park, Red Bank, and West: Request an appointment three days in advance of your need, or call that location directly

Please note that a notary will NOT be available at all times the library is open. In addition, due to the historic nature of the building, EVPL West is not fully ADA accessible.

This service is available at no charge to the public and you do not need to have an EVPL library card.

Guidelines for Notary Service

  • Documents to be notarized must be signed in front of the Notary. Do not sign them beforehand.
  • Documents to be notarized must be complete. Bring the entire document, not just the page(s) that needs to be signed.
  • All people signing the document(s) must be physically present to have their signature notarized.
  • Valid photo identification is required for each person signing the document. The following types of photo IDs are accepted:
    • State-issued driver’s license or ID card
    • Passport
    • Military ID
      • NOTE: Your photo ID needs to be current or not expired within the previous 3 years. Your name on the ID must match the name on the document being notarized.
  • If your document requires witnesses, please bring them with you to the notarization. This is especially important if you will be going to a branch location for the service.
  • Notaries reserve the right to decline service if any of the above guidelines are not met, if there are concerns about the authenticity of the documents, or if the individual(s) signing the documents appear to be unaware of what they are signing or under duress.

Library notaries will NOT notarize the following:

  • Documents in a language other than English
  • I-9 Forms
  • Real estate transactions
  • Documents requiring financial certification/authentication
  • Documents that require an electronic signature
  • Auto Titles
  • Corporate or Business documents
  • Depositions

Note: Our notaries are not attorneys licensed to practice law in Indiana. They are not allowed to draft legal records, give advice on legal matters, including immigration, or charge a fee for those activities.
